Coordinating with civilian agencies and interagency partners is handled by the Joint Staff directorate dedicated to civil-military and interagency liaison. This unit serves as the primary interface between military planning and civilian government partners, coordinating with other U.S. government departments, international partners, NGOs, and host-nation authorities to ensure military actions align with political objectives and diplomatic efforts. It helps translate policy and diplomacy into actionable military plans, and it shepherds interagency coordination across planning, operations, and execution.

Other directorates have different focus areas that don’t cover interagency coordination. The readiness-focused directorate ensures forces are trained and prepared, the information and communications directorate handles cyber and communications infrastructure, and the logistics and sustainment directorate oversees supply, maintenance, and distribution.
